The young man, just 20 years old, is set to receive a significant accolade for his courage and altruism at a ceremony hosted by Waverley Council tomorrow. He will be awarded the key to the city along with a unique lifetime parking permit for the beach.

Waverley Mayor Will Nemesh expressed that this honor serves as a testament to the community’s “unending gratitude.”

“Rabbi Lazaroff was aiding the late Rabbi Eli Schlanger during a Chanukah gathering when he sprang into action to assist the gravely injured NSW Police Constable Scott Dyson, using his own shirt to control the bleeding,” explained Nemesh.

“In the midst of his heroic efforts to aid the officer, Leibel himself sustained serious injuries from a gunshot wound.”

All Waverley councillors agreed unanimously to recognize Lazaroff’s valor.

Lazaroff had arrived in Sydney in September to learn from fellow Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who coordinated the celebration.

Tragically, Schlanger, aged 41, lost his life in the attack.

Ahmed al Ahmed and Gefen Bitton will also be presented with keys to the city and lifetime Waverley beach passes.

Al Ahmed, 43, wrestled a gun from one of the alleged shooters as attendees at the Chanukah by the Sea event were being targeted, slowing down the attack and saving lives, while 30-year-old Bitton ran to his side to help.
