Nintendo’s original Switch has now claimed the title of the company’s best-selling console ever, surpassing the sales milestone set by the DS handheld. According to Nintendo’s latest financial report, as of December 31, 2025, the Switch has sold an impressive 155.37 million units since its 2017 debut. This achievement edges out the Nintendo DS, which sold 154.02 million units since its release in 2004.

Back in November, Nintendo announced that the Switch was in a tight race with the DS for the top spot. The holiday shopping season was anticipated to push the Switch ahead, despite Nintendo’s announcement that future development efforts would pivot towards the Switch 2. Nevertheless, Nintendo had assured consumers that the original Switch would remain available, taking into account market demand and business conditions.

For Nintendo to claim the crown of the best-selling video game console of all time, it must continue to push Switch sales past the Sony PlayStation 2’s record. The PlayStation 2, which ceased production in January 2013, boasts over 160 million units sold during its remarkable 13-year run.

The holiday season also spurred demand for the newly launched Switch 2, with Nintendo reporting sales of 7.01 million units between October and December. This marks a significant increase from the 4.54 million units sold in the preceding quarter. Since its launch in June 2025, the Switch 2 has already moved 17.37 million units, swiftly surpassing the Wii U’s lifetime sales of 13.7 million.

The introduction of the Switch 2 has fueled a substantial 51 percent rise in Nintendo’s net profit for the first nine months of the fiscal year 2026, reaching ¥358.86 billion ($2.31 billion). Net sales nearly doubled during the same period, climbing to ¥1.906 trillion ($12.2 billion) from ¥956.2 billion ($6.1 billion) the previous year. Looking forward, Nintendo remains optimistic, forecasting the sale of 19 million Switch 2 units by the end of the current fiscal year.
