A search was being carried out at the French offices of Elon Musk‘s social media platform X as part of an investigation opened in January 2025, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday.

The prosecutor’s cybercrime division is spearheading a raid, according to an official statement, with Europol lending support to the operation.

Both X’s chairman, Elon Musk, and its former CEO, Linda Yaccarino, are scheduled to attend hearings in April. Additionally, X’s employees are set to be questioned, serving as witnesses, as noted by the Paris prosecutor.

CNN has reached out to X for their response on the matter.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau highlighted that the ongoing French investigation has expanded its scope. Initially centered on potential algorithm misuse, it now includes Grok’s controversial sexualized deepfakes.

The European Commission launched an inquiry into X’s AI chatbot Grok just last week, responding to criticisms about its capacity to produce sexually explicit images.

Concerns over this functionality intensified late last year. It was revealed that the chatbot had generated numerous digitally altered images, undressing women and children at users’ requests.

The social media behemoth has since stopped all Grok users from creating images of people in revealing clothing.
