Former tennis pro and ex-state Liberal deputy leader Sam Groth has announced he will quit Victorian politics next week, triggering a byelection in his seat of Nepean on the Mornington Peninsula just months out from the 2026 state election.

This afternoon, a first-term Member of Parliament made a significant announcement, sharing news of his upcoming departure from political office.

“Next week, I will step down from my role as the Member for Nepean in the Parliament of Victoria to explore new opportunities,” declared Groth in his statement.

Groth served as deputy leader of the Liberal Party under both former leader Brad Battin and current leader Jess Wilson. (The Age)

Reflecting on his tenure, he expressed, “Serving the people of Nepean has been a true honor, and I am deeply thankful for the trust they have bestowed upon me to represent our community.”

Groth extended his gratitude towards his team, remarking, “I am immensely grateful to my staff for their professionalism, dedication, and tireless efforts in supporting the Nepean community.”

As he looks towards the future, Groth offered his well-wishes to his colleagues, stating, “I wish Opposition Leader Jess Wilson and the Liberal team all the very best for the upcoming November election.”

Lastly, he paid a heartfelt tribute to his family, saying, “Most importantly, I thank my family—my wife Britt and our twin boys—for their unwavering love and support throughout my political journey.”
