New Ryan Field, Northwestern football stadium in Evanston, Illinois, to debut vs. Penn State on Oct. 2

In Evanston, Illinois, Northwestern Wildcats fans will need to exercise patience before witnessing their team play in the new Ryan Field. The stadium is now scheduled to open in October, meaning it won’t be ready for the start of the Big Ten conference games for the 2026 football season.

The construction of the new Ryan Field comes with a hefty price tag of $862 million, funded entirely by private donations. Additionally, the project will funnel tens of millions into the local Evanston community. The Ryan family, who have generously funded the project, had anticipated this timeline all along.

Adverse weather conditions, particularly the cold and rain experienced during the fall and winter, have delayed construction by approximately five weeks. Despite these setbacks, the new 35,000-seat stadium is taking shape on Central Street, standing as a modern marvel yet smaller in size compared to the historic structure it is replacing.

This state-of-the-art facility is a gift from the Ryan family, dedicated to Pat Ryan’s alma mater, reflecting their commitment to enhancing the university’s infrastructure.

Pat Ryan Jr., representing RyanSports Development, expressed confidence that the community will eventually embrace the new stadium. He acknowledged that while change can be met with resistance, the project’s long-term benefits will become apparent over time.

Pat Ryan Jr. with RyanSports Development says after a lot of community consultation, people are going to love the project. But like all things that represent change, that might take a little while.

“Sometimes, when a new project comes and it’s different, some people can start to catastrophize things and imagine something worse. And I think, we announce where to do a holiday festival there Christmastime, we’re going to do it, Halloween and autumn festival, and I think people really, those things. You know, I think, there’s a lot of excitement about the fact that we’re going to be a good neighbor. We’re going to keep our promises,” Ryan said.

The first game under the new lights will take place on Friday, Oct. 2 vs. Penn State.
