Inside the heart of 'Jimpa': Olivia Colman and John Lithgow on their new queer family drama

The dynamics of contemporary families will unfold on the big screen with the release of a compelling new film this week.

Titled “Jimpa,” this semi-autobiographical drama by director Sophie Hyde, known for “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” features Academy Award winner Olivia Colman and Emmy winner John Lithgow. The narrative intricately weaves through three generations within the queer community.

The plot centers on filmmaker Hannah, portrayed by Colman, as she embarks on a journey to Amsterdam with her trans non-binary teenager, Frances, to visit their gay grandfather, Jim, played by Lithgow. When Frances opts to remain in Amsterdam for a year, Hannah is confronted with reflections on her past and the implications of her parenting.

At the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Lithgow shared with On The Red Carpet, “This film is not only exceptional but also remarkably timely, capturing the spirit of the era.”

For Sophie Hyde, the project holds a particular significance. Frances is portrayed by her own child, Aud Mason-Hyde, marking their debut in a feature film. Hyde emphasized her deliberate choice of actors capable of delivering deep empathy in their performances.

Speaking about Colman, Hyde remarked, “When you have someone as instinctively brilliant as Olivia, you allow her the space to explore. Her instincts are unparalleled, and there’s little need for adjustment.”

What should audiences take away from watching the film? Mason-Hyde hopes viewers watch the film and “celebrate queerness and difference.”

“Jimpa” first gained attention at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and later served as the opening night gala for the Adelaide Film Festival.

“Jimpa” opens in theaters on February 6.
