The graves of Australian soldiers damaged by ongoing conflict in Gaza are set to be restored promptly, as officials have assured the public.

The Gaza War Cemetery, located in Gaza City, serves as the final resting place for approximately 250 Australian troops. Many of these soldiers were part of the renowned light horse brigade that fought against Turkish forces during World War I.

These Australian soldiers are interred beside thousands of British troops within the cemetery, which falls under the care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

A spokesperson from the CWGC stated that their goal is to secure and restore the cemetery at the earliest opportunity once conditions are safe. However, they noted that complete restoration might take a significant amount of time, as initial post-conflict efforts will likely focus on humanitarian needs.

Since the conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, when militants led by Hamas invaded Israel, large areas of Gaza have been heavily affected by Israel’s retaliatory operations.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 67,000 Palestinians have lost their lives during the conflict. The ministry’s reports do not separate civilian casualties from combatants but indicate that about half of the deceased were women and children.

The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government, and the UN and many independent experts consider its figures to be the most reliable estimate of wartime casualties.
