The heartbroken relatives of Himali Gurung are seeking clarity after she tragically passed away while sleeping at her daughter’s residence.
Security cameras captured the moment when a vehicle collided with the bedroom where the 53-year-old was resting, sending sparks into the air.
Residents living nearby sprang into action after a “thunderous crash” echoed through Alexander Road in Rivervale shortly before the clock struck midnight.
Gurung was found beneath the debris and was pronounced dead at the location.
Authorities reported that a Ford Falcon veered off course, crossed into oncoming traffic, and barreled through a driveway and a fence before crashing into the home.
Both the alleged driver, aged 36, and his 43-year-old passenger emerged unscathed from the incident.
SES crews were called in to stabilise the home as major crash investigators attempted to map out the moments before impact.
This morning, devastated family gathered outside the damaged home, trying to come to terms with their sudden loss.
The 53-year-old woman and her husband had only been in Australia for a few months, having flown over from Nepal to visit family.
Gurung was remembered as a warm and charming woman, whose smile never faded.
“She was the heart and soul of our family, our greatest source of strength, comfort and laughter,” one family member wrote on an online fundraiser.
“This tragedy has left our family facing overwhelming emotional, psychological and financial hardship.”
A 36-year-old Kewdale man was arrested at the scene and later charged with manslaughter. He’ll face court on Sunday.
