The scene of the incident, a home located near the intersection of Leith and Ridgeland, was marked by a police presence, with at least five evidence markers visible at the doorstep. This underscores the gravity of the situation that unfolded there.

The Waukegan Police Department reported that three officers responded to the residence after receiving a call about a 58-year-old man who was attempting to take his own life. Unfortunately, the situation escalated, leading to a shooting involving the officers.

Despite immediate efforts from both police and firefighters to provide medical assistance, the individual succumbed to his injuries. This heartbreaking event has left the community in mourning as they await further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The officers were involved in a shooting, Waukegan police said. Police and firefighters provided assistance, but the man died of his injuries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting were not yet known. No one else was hurt.

Crime tape was wrapped around several homes. ABC7 also saw a Waukegan police cruiser towed away from the scene.

“The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit is currently leading the investigation at the scene,” Martinez said.

ABC7 has reached out to ISP to get more information about what happened, but has yet to hear back.

No further information was immediately available.
