A Total Fire ban has been declared for most of Victoria today, as the driest conditions in nearly 20 years coupled with blustery winds spike the state’s fire danger rating.

An extreme fire danger warning has been issued for most parts of the state, with warm weather and north-westerly winds forecasted, followed by a brisk south-westerly change.

The only areas not under an extreme fire danger rating are the South-West and East Gippsland Fire Districts, where the risk is rated as high.

“We urge residents in the affected districts to adhere strictly to the Total Fire Ban conditions and to carefully consider how the heightened fire risk may impact them,” officials advised.

“Ensure your fire plan is current and includes all possible scenarios.”

Yesterday, the north-east district was already under a total fire ban due to hot, dry conditions paired with moderate westerly winds.

According to Parkyn, today’s extreme conditions are expected to be a brief occurrence, with Melbourne’s temperature anticipated to fall by 14 degrees, reaching a high of 18 degrees on Thursday.

Three major fires are still burning in Victoria, namely the Walwa, Longwood and Otways fires. They have all been contained.
