Tragedy struck a Georgia elementary school on Tuesday when a woman was fatally shot in the parking lot, in what appears to be a case of domestic violence, according to school authorities.
The victim’s identity has not been disclosed, but local news outlet WSB reported that the suspect was apprehended in Houston County, over 100 miles from the crime scene. He faces charges of cruelty to children, reckless driving, and evading law enforcement.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Christopher Ates, will be charged with murder upon his transfer to Fulton County. His arrest followed a short pursuit that ended when he crashed his vehicle, as detailed by WAGA.
In response to the incident, Palmetto Elementary School’s Principal, Jacqueline Bowens, issued a letter to parents, reported by WSB. “Though this is an incredibly challenging situation for our community, I want to assure you that no students or staff from Palmetto Elementary were involved, and at no time were those within our building in danger,” Bowens stated.

Palmetto’s 550 students were moved to Bear Creek Middle School in Fairburn, Palmetto Police said.
Bowens said the school would open on Wednesday with counselor and additional support staff available.
