The serenity of an Italian highway was shattered on Monday when a dramatic armed robbery unfolded, targeting an armoured security truck. Two men are now facing the Italian courts in connection with this brazen heist attempt.

A masked gang, wielding Kalashnikov rifles, launched an audacious attack on the security vehicle. In their chaotic escape, they commandeered a student’s car, escalating the incident into a high-stakes confrontation with the Carabinieri, Italy’s revered police force. Amid the chaos, a fierce exchange of gunfire left one officer wounded.

The gang, consisting of at least six members, demonstrated a reckless disregard for public safety. They halted traffic by setting a vehicle ablaze in front of the armoured truck, which belonged to the security firm Battistolli. This forced a dramatic standstill, amplifying the tension on the highway.

Italy’s Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, condemned the incident, labeling it a “bloody event.” He underscored the imperative of prioritizing community protection against the “madness of criminals” who dared to endanger lives so flagrantly.

Footage of the incident circulated widely, shocking viewers with its intensity. Battistolli responded to the harrowing scenes by expressing solidarity with their staff, the bystanders involved, and their families, emphasizing the collective trauma experienced during this ordeal.

The security company described the widely shared footage of the incident as shocking, adding, “We express our closeness and solidarity to our colleagues, the bystanders involved, and their families.”

It highlighted a surge in incidents of this nature, and called for more to be done to improve security.

“In the last two years, the Battistolli Group has suffered 14 attacks, a situation that requires attention and concrete action,” it said.

The suspects, two men aged 38 and 62, will be charged with a range of offences including attempted murder, aggravated robbery and possession of war weapons, according to Italy’s public broadcaster RAI.

The injured officer is still being treated in hospital, it added.
