The CEO of Instagram, a leading force in the social media landscape, recently asserted that becoming “clinically addicted” to the platform is not feasible. This statement was made during his testimony in a U.S. court case.

Adam Mosseri is the first social media executive to speak at the trial in California on the issue of social media addiction, where YouTube and Instagram’s parent company Meta is being sued.
A now-20-year-old woman, known as KGM, alleges the companies intentionally developed addictive features to hook young users, which she claims harmed her mental health.

He further emphasized, “Teenagers are not our most lucrative demographic; we earn less revenue from them compared to other age groups on the platform.”

This legal proceeding in California marks the first of over 1,500 similar lawsuits that are poised to go to trial. The outcome could set a precedent for holding social media companies accountable for their alleged impact on the mental well-being of young users.

Australian children under 16 have been banned from making accounts on several social media platforms, including Instagram, under laws introduced late last year.
