Far from the dazzling lights of Manhattan, the Hamptons, or Hyannis Port, a different life unfolds. Recently spotted shoveling snow in a chic yet understated winter ensemble, a woman quietly carries on with her life. She is the sole surviving sibling of a famed fashion icon of the 20th century.

This woman is Lisa Bessette, the 61-year-old sister of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, captured in photographs for the first time since December 1998.

Lisa’s last public appearance was eight months before the tragic plane crash in July 1999, which claimed the lives of her twin sister Lauren, 34, Carolyn, 33, and Carolyn’s husband, John F. Kennedy Jr., 38.

An art scholar residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, since the early 1990s, Lisa was reportedly very close to her sisters. The devastating loss left her heartbroken.

To this day, she has remained silent about the tragic events, choosing to grieve privately.

She has never spoken of the tragedy in public.

Almost 30 years on, America’s fascination with Carolyn and JFK Jr. is only set to grow thanks to Love Story, Ryan Murphy’s hotly-anticipated new FX drama about the golden couple’s romance.

The nine episode series, which hit screens on February 12, stars Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn, Paul Anthony Kelly as JFK Jr. and Sydney Lemmon as Lauren Bessette.

Photos taken during filming on the streets of New York City last year show the pair dressed in near-identical outfits to the real John and Carolyn.

Lisa appears keen to avoid the show, though.

When the Daily Mail visited her $950,000 cottage last week, she professed minimal knowledge of the series.

‘I saw something about the FX show. When is it coming out?’ Lisa asked.

Lisa continued to guard her sisters’ memory fiercely, saying: ‘I’m not going to talk to a reporter about this. I never have.’

Polite and softly-spoken, she added: ‘I’m not wearing shoes so I’m going to close the door,’ then ended the conversation.

In the decades after her sisters’ deaths, Lisa has built a simple and seemingly contented life for herself in Ann Arbor, which sits around 45 miles west of Detroit and is home to the University of Michigan.

She lives with longtime partner Howard Lay, a 71-year-old professor of art history at the university where Lisa also worked as an art scholar.

Lisa drives a modest Volkswagen and picks up her coffee at a local farm-sourced grocery store just a short walk away from her doorstep.

Locals who’ve interacted with her at the nearby Argus Farm Stop describe her as a ‘nice’ person who is warm and friendly and ‘doesn’t come across as standoffish.’

Lisa completed her PhD in medieval art at the University of Michigan in 2005 and has worked part-time at the school’s art museum, the New York Post previously reported.

She was among those in attendance at Carolyn and JFK Jr’s small, secret wedding on Georgia’s Cumberland Island in 1996.

Carolyn’s breathtakingly simple $40,000 Narciso Rodriguez wedding dress caused a sensation and is still hailed as one of the most tasteful bridal gowns of all time.

Novelist Robbie Littell, who attended the wedding, offered a rare insight into Lisa’s personality after meeting her there.

‘The Bessette sisters, they were like the fades.’ he said. ‘(Carolyn’s) sisters were fierce. The other one was kind of cool, too, I liked her – the one that lives in Michigan now, Lisa. She was funny. And she was a very good spectator.’

Despite her megastar sister and proximity to the elite, Lisa has always remained admirably down-to-earth and went back to her studies after Carolyn’s big day.

She was in Munich, Germany working on her PhD at the time of the plane crash that killed Carolyn and Lauren, who worked as an investment banker.

A statement issued by Lisa’s mother, father and stepfather after the plane crash said: ‘Nothing in life is preparation for the loss of a child.’

There was no comment from Lisa and she has kept her grief private ever since.

Lisa, her parents and her stepfather all attended Carolyn and JFK Jr’s funeral. Their relationship with the Kennedys deteriorated shortly after the tragedy.

Lisa’s mother Ann Freeman filed a wrongful death lawsuit against JFK Jr’s estate in connection to her daughters’ deaths. The Bessette family ultimately settled with the Kennedys for $15 million.

Ann died in 2007, meaning Lisa’s only living relatives are her father William Bessette, who lives in South Carolina, and her surgeon stepfather Dr Richard Freeman, who helped raise Lisa and her sisters in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The Bessette sisters were largely raised by their mother and stepfather, although Carolyn is said to have reunited with her father before her death at the behest of JFK Jr.

Carolyn’s famous wardrobe, including her wedding dress, remains in her family’s possession.

Carolyn and JFK Jr. – the second child of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis – met when JFK Jr. had an appointment at Calvin Klein’s flagship store in Manhattan where Carolyn worked as a publicist.

JFK Jr. had previously dated stars including Madonna and Daryl Hannah.

His movie star looks and impeccable pedigree saw him lauded as the world’s most eligible bachelor.

But it was solidly-middle class Carolyn, the daughter of a teacher and engineer, who ended up marrying him.

Carolyn’s bold fashion choices and her ability to turn even the simplest looks into a chic ensemble enchanted the public.

She never gave an interview, with that quiet self-confidence and desire for privacy turning Carolyn into a fascinating enigma after her death.

Friends claimed Carolyn and JFK Jr were having serious marital problems and predict the marriage would likely have ended were it not for the crash that claimed their lives.

JFK Jr. was flying the small Piper Saratoga plane at the time with his inexperience as a pilot blamed for the tragedy.

He likely became disorientated while flying at night, with the plane crashing into the Atlantic off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.

Other pilots flying in the area that night said the horizon was impossible to see because of hazy weather.

The bodies of JFK Jr, Carolyn and Lauren were found five days later, cremated and buried at sea the following day.

Twenty seven years on, their mystique only continues to grow.
