'The Secret Agent' star Wagner Moura is making Oscars history: 'Beautiful moment for Brazilian culture'

LOS ANGELES — Wagner Moura has carved a niche in Oscars history, becoming the first Brazilian actor to be nominated for Best Actor. This landmark achievement follows Brazil’s triumph last year when “I’m Still Here” secured the Best International Feature award at the Academy Awards.

“We’re witnessing a remarkable era for Brazilian culture and cinema,” remarked Moura, who is receiving international acclaim for his portrayal of Armando in the innovative spy thriller “The Secret Agent.” The film, set against the backdrop of Brazil’s military dictatorship in 1977, showcases Moura in a gripping role as a fugitive.

His stellar performance has already earned him the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Globe, underscoring his talent and versatility.

As the Oscars approach, “The Secret Agent” is up for four awards, including a nod for Achievement in Casting, a newly introduced category by the Academy after a 25-year gap. Moura expressed deep appreciation for his fellow cast members, noting, “Our cast beautifully reflects Brazil’s diversity, showcasing a range of body types and skin tones.”

Watch out for Tânia Maria, a scene-stealer who has become an unexpected sensation at 79. Once a seamstress, she’s now a sought-after actress, even starring in Burger King commercials. Moura enthused, “She’s a newfound star in Brazil, and her influence is so widespread that many will emulate her during Carnival.”

Blending elements of political intrigue, nods to “Jaws,” and a quirky urban legend about a menacing hairy leg, “The Secret Agent” is a film like no other. Moura describes it as “a story of a man who clings to his values amidst a world that urges him otherwise.”

“The Secret Agent” is rated R and now playing in theaters.
