Authorities have clarified that last night’s incident involving a vehicle crashing into a synagogue’s gates in Brisbane is not being considered an act of terrorism.

A 32-year-old man faces charges after driving a Toyota Hilux into the gates of the Brisbane Synagogue located on Margaret Street.

The collision resulted in the gates collapsing and nearly striking a bystander.

Security cameras captured the vehicle as it initially approached the location, only to briefly turn away from the gates.

The footage then shows the vehicle reversing, aligning itself, and forcefully hitting the gates before fleeing the scene.

Fortunately, someone present at the synagogue narrowly escaped being hit by both the vehicle and the falling gates.

The man was arrested after in his car and charged with multiple offences, including serious vilification or hate crime, wilful damage and drug possession.

Queensland Police it wsn’t being investigated as terrorism.

“This is a criminal investigation, we are considering the man’s mental health and intoxication as being contributing factor ,” Acting Superintendent Michael Hogan said.

He will face Brisbane Magistrates Court today.
