WASHINGTON – In a surprising turn of events, President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he intends to increase the global tariff he plans to impose from 10% to 15%. This change comes just a day after he initially set the tariff rate at 10%.

Trump’s decision was revealed through a social media post, where he criticized a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on tariffs as “ridiculous” and “anti-American.” He stated that his choice to raise the tariff was based on a “thorough, detailed, and complete review” of this ruling.

The Supreme Court had previously determined that Trump lacked the emergency power to enforce many of the sweeping tariffs he desired. Nevertheless, on Friday night, Trump signed an executive order allowing him to circumvent Congress and impose a 10% tax on imports globally. However, these tariffs are set to last only 150 days unless Congress extends them.

This latest move to increase tariffs further underscores Trump’s determination to utilize tariffs as a primary economic tool, despite legal challenges. The president’s unpredictable tariff announcements over the past year have frequently unsettled markets and affected international relations.

The initial 10% tariff was scheduled to be implemented starting February 24, as per the order signed by Trump on Friday night. Meanwhile, the White House has yet to clarify when an updated order reflecting the 15% tariff will be signed.

In addition to the temporary 15% tariffs, Trump indicated on Friday that he is also exploring other avenues to impose tariffs through different sections of federal law, which would necessitate an investigation by the Commerce Department.
