The US Secret Service says an armed man has been shot and killed after entering the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

In a rare weekend appearance at the White House, President Trump found himself at the center of attention due to an unsettling incident at his Mar-a-Lago resort. The First Lady, Melania Trump, was also present with him during this time.

Authorities have yet to disclose the identity of the individual involved in the shooting, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. The situation unfolded when the suspect breached the north gate of Mar-a-Lago as another vehicle was exiting the premises, according to a statement from Guglielmi.

As investigators work diligently to understand the motive behind this act, they are in the process of developing a psychological profile of the suspect. When questioned about any potential prior encounters with law enforcement, Bradshaw mentioned that the individual was not recognized by authorities at this time.

In recent years, the United States has been shaken by numerous incidents of political violence. Notable events from the previous year include the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the murder of the Democratic leader in the Minnesota state House and her husband, as well as a shooting involving another lawmaker and his spouse. Additionally, an arson attack targeted the official residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

This latest breach at Trump’s Florida residence occurred just a few kilometers from his West Palm Beach golf club. This location was previously the scene of an attempted assassination during the 2024 election. In that incident, Secret Service agents thwarted Ryan Routh, who had aimed a rifle at the President from behind shrubbery. The agent acted swiftly, firing at Routh and causing him to drop his weapon before any harm could come to Trump.

The incursion on Saturday at Trump’s Florida home is a few kilometres from his West Palm Beach golf club where a man tried to assassinate Trump while he played golf during the 2024 election. A Secret Service agent spotted that man, Ryan Routh, aiming a rifle through the shrubbery before Trump came into view. Officials said Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire and caused Routh to drop his weapon.

Routh was found guilty last year and sentenced this month to life in prison.

Trump also survived an assassination attempt at a Butler, Pennsylvania campaign rally in 2024. That gunman fired eight shots before being killed by a Secret Service counter sniper.

The White House did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Sunday.
