The trial of Kouri Richins, a Utah mother charged with the murder of her husband, Eric Richins, is underway as she stands accused of poisoning his Moscow Mule cocktail.
The 35-year-old Richins is facing multiple charges in Summit County, including allegations that she fatally poisoned her husband in May 2023 by lacing his drink with fentanyl at levels exceeding five times the lethal dose.
- Aggravated murder
- Attempted aggravated murder
- Insurance fraud
- Forgery
Adding a twist to the story, Richins, a mother of three, later authored a children’s book titled “Are You with Me?” which tells the story of a father watching over his son from the afterlife.
The case also involves accusations of a prior attempt on Eric’s life, allegedly attempting to poison him by tainting his sandwich on Valentine’s Day 2022.
Richins’ defense team argues that there is no definitive evidence showing how Eric consumed the drug, noting that law enforcement failed to adequately test the cup from which he drank.
The defense argued that it’s unclear how Eric ingested the drug and that investigators did not thoroughly test the drink’s cup for evidence.
The prosecution stated that Richins, who had been having an affair, had a $4 million debt and killed her husband to gain financial freedom.
Richins has pleaded not guilty. Check back for updates.
