Eric Dane, known for his roles in iconic series such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” has had the cause of his passing confirmed. According to People magazine, which accessed his death certificate, Dane succumbed to respiratory failure. This condition was attributed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which was cited as an underlying factor in his death.

The 53-year-old actor announced his struggle with ALS in April 2025, and sadly, he passed away last month. He leaves behind his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.

ALS is a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to the weakening and atrophy of voluntary muscles, as explained by the Mayo Clinic. While there is no cure, treatments can slow the progression of symptoms and improve quality of life. Typically, patients face a life expectancy of three to five years following diagnosis.

In a heartfelt statement, Dane’s family expressed, “During his battle with ALS, Eric was a fervent advocate for awareness and research, driven to make a meaningful impact for others on the same journey. He will be sorely missed and cherished always. Eric held his fans close to his heart and deeply appreciated the overwhelming love and support he received throughout his life.”

ALS is a progressive degenerative disease that affects the nerve cells, leading to paralysis of the muscles, according to the Mayo Clinic. There is no cure for ALS, but progress can be slowed with medication and physical therapy. Most patients die within three to five years of a diagnosis.

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” his family said in a statement after his death. “He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received.”

A memoir by Dane is scheduled to be published in late 2026.
