A private school on Sydney‘s upper north shore has begun keeping an eye on students’ toilet use with CCTV outside bathrooms and alerting parents when their kids enter and exit.

St Leo’s Catholic College in Wahroonga has informed parents through a recent newsletter that it will increase monitoring of restroom use. This decision comes after incidents of vandalism and poor choices were reported in the newly renovated facilities.

Assistant Principal Patrick Brennan stated, “The College has put several measures in place to tackle this troubling issue.”

Following the newsletter, Principal Tony Gleeson clarified that security cameras are only installed in areas that are both external and publicly accessible, such as playgrounds and entry or exit points.

“The cameras aim to enhance the safety of students and staff, deter inappropriate behavior, and help maintain a secure school environment,” Gleeson explained.

He also assured that “No cameras have been installed in private or sensitive locations like bathrooms, and all procedures adhere to the policies of Catholic Schools Broken Bay and relevant privacy laws.”
