US President Donald Trump said embattled Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem will be replaced with Oklahoma Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin.
Trump made the announcement on social media on Thursday (Friday AEST), two days after Noem faced a grilling on Capitol Hill from Republicans and Democrats.

Kristi Noem took to the stage in Nashville, Tennessee, to speak at a law enforcement gathering just after Donald Trump announced her removal from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Despite the timing, Noem did not address her dismissal during her remarks.

The DHS has been shuttered for 20 days, yet numerous employees continue their work, often without compensation. The situation has sparked considerable discussion and concern.

Noem has faced scrutiny, not only on immigration issues but also regarding the Trump administration’s handling of disaster response and the speed at which emergency funding was approved through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Criticism has poured in from various quarters, including within her own Republican Party.

If nominated, Mullin would require Senate confirmation to become the DHS secretary. However, according to federal laws on executive branch vacancies, he could serve as the acting secretary while his nomination is under consideration.
