The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has confirmed that the individual fatally shot by Chicago police on Monday was inside a vehicle linked to an earlier shooting incident on the Eisenhower Expressway.

This previous shooting, which occurred without causing any injuries, led to significant traffic disruption during the afternoon rush hour.

According to COPA, authorities were tipped off about the presence of the white Mercedes in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, specifically on the 800-block of North Homan Avenue. At around 5:30 p.m., an unmarked police vehicle attempted to stop the driver for questioning.

As the car sped off, it struck a pedestrian who was crossing the street, as reported by officials.

The police pursued the vehicle through an alley, where it subsequently collided with a CTA bus, as noted by COPA.

Additionally, authorities stated that the driver crashed into an unmarked Chicago Police Department squad car during the course of events.

Witness video shared with ABC7 Chicago shows officers with guns drawn.

The car reversed and, while driving toward the bus, an officer shot at it, COPA said.

The driver was shot and taken to a hospital, where he died.

He has not yet been identified.

Two officers were also taken to a hospital in good condition. A weapon was recovered on the scene, COPA said.

Anyone with information or video footage related to the shooting is urged to call COPA at 312-746-3609 or visit ChicagoCOPA.org.
