Melania Trump documentary soars to the top of Amazon Prime charts

Melania Trump’s documentary has taken Amazon Prime by storm, quickly ascending to the top of the platform’s movie charts this week.

This contentious documentary, backed with a substantial production budget of $40 million and an additional $35 million for marketing efforts, debuted on January 30. It has swiftly captured the number one spot on Amazon Prime’s coveted top 10 movie chart.

Currently, the documentary outshines other popular titles, surpassing the 2026 action-packed thriller “The Bluff,” the enigmatic 2010 Portuguese mystery “Backlight,” and the high-octane 2026 film “The Wrecking Crew,” starring Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa.

Notably, it also edges out the Oscar-nominated “Sinners,” which sits at the eighth position on the list.

Amazon Prime has elevated “Melania,” co-produced and directed by Brett Ratner, to the third most popular title across the entire platform.

However, it trails behind the newly released crime drama series “Scarpetta,” featuring Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, which currently holds the top spot in the overall rankings.

Young Sherlock, which was launched on March 4, is the streamer’s second most popular title.

Melania follows the First Lady in the 20 days leading up to President Donald Trump’s second inauguration.

The project was backed by Amazon MGM Studios after it won the Hollywood bidding war against Disney and Paramount to produce it.

The documentary smashed its dismal box office sales estimates during opening weekend – much to the shock of Hollywood.

In its opening week, Melania earned $7 million in ticket sales across the US and Canada making it the best-performing theatrical release for a documentary, outside of concert films, since 2012.

The film has scored a shocking 11 percent from Rotten Tomatoes’ professional critics, while audiences have given it 98 percent.

Rotten Tomatoes’ viewer rating system allows anyone to review a movie.

One of the one-star reviews reads: ‘As a lifelong Republican, this was a tough watch. Other than some nice interior shots of the glorious Trump residence, there was nothing to it. A missed opportunity to share her story.’

On the other end of the spectrum, a five-star review read: ‘Love Melania! She is beauty and grace! The most stylish and gorgeous First Lady!

‘I really enjoyed watching this documentary! Being an immigrant myself, I can relate to her in some ways how Slavic women love beauty and style!

‘Pretty sure all the low rating reviews are from the Trump hating democrats sadly!

‘Wish American people would be more honest and not be moved by hateful feelings! This documentary is worth much bigger rating than one star…’

Across the critical landscape from newspapers to entertainment sites, the verdict was strikingly consistent – the film offers spectacle, access, and luxury, but precious little insight.

Upon its release, The Guardian, whose critic said he had the cinema all to himself at his screening, gave the film one star, calling it: ‘Dispiriting, deadly and unrevealing.’

Variety also questioned the film’s value and insight, writing that it is ‘many things – but it’s not $75 million worth of movie’ and that much of it simply shows ‘a woman walking into and out of rooms.’

Vanity Fair also dismissed the documentary as dull, propagandistic, and emotionally opaque, arguing that it ‘plays like a mockumentary’ and functions as ‘a work of propaganda.’
