Charges will not be laid against three people who were probed over the hunt for Dezi Freeman and the fatal shooting of two police officers in Porepunkah last year.

A 42-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man, both from Porepunkah, recently faced questioning by investigators concerning charges of obstructing police in connection with a fatal shooting incident.

Additionally, a third individual was interviewed on allegations of attempted theft.

Despite a thorough investigation that led detectives to compile detailed briefs of evidence, authorities today revealed that there is not enough evidence to pursue charges against the three individuals.

“The briefs were not authorized because there was insufficient evidence to support a prosecution at this time,” a spokesperson for Victoria Police stated.

The spokesperson further noted, “These briefs underwent an independent review, and the conclusion remained unchanged.”

It’s been nearly six months since Dezi Freeman allegedly shot and killed Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart on a property in Porepunkah.

Police attended the Rayner Track property on the morning of August 26 to execute a search warrant on behalf of the Wangaratta Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team.

A third officer was seriously injured when Freeman allegedly opened fire on the officers, before he fled into surrounding bushland.

A reward of up to $1 million remains in place for information leading to his arrest.
