A large explosion rocked an area of Iran‘s capital where thousands were gathered on Friday for the annual state-organised Quds Day to support the Palestinians and call for Israel‘s demise. Israel had earlier warned that it would target the area in central Tehran.

No casualties were immediately reported, yet the decision to move forward with large-scale protests, coupled with Israel’s warning to target the area, highlighted the intense resolve on both sides as the conflict approached its second week. This ongoing war has not only unsettled the global economy but also shows no signs of abating.

Iran has continued to launch widespread daily missile and drone attacks on Israel and neighbouring Gulf states, and has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil passes, even as US and Israeli warplanes pummel military and other targets across Iran.

On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the tragic death of a French soldier in an offensive targeting Irbil within Iraq’s northern Kurdish region. Earlier, France reported that six of its soldiers were injured during a drone assault in Irbil, where French forces participate in a multinational mission to assist Iraqi troops combating the Islamic State group.

In the same region, UK officials reported that several American personnel sustained minor injuries on Wednesday after drone attacks targeted a base in Irbil, which accommodates both British and American forces. Italy also noted that a base with its troops in Irbil was struck on Wednesday, though fortunately, no injuries were reported.
