A 10-year-old boy from California is currently under the care of mental health specialists following an incident where he allegedly stabbed a 7-year-old girl with a kitchen knife at an elementary school on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. in the play area of Benjamin Bubb Elementary School, according to the City of Mountain View. The young victim, who was engaged in an after-school activity at the time, sustained three stab wounds to her shoulder.

The Mountain View Fire Department provided immediate medical attention to the girl at the scene before she was handed over to her parents’ care.

The attack prompted an immediate lockdown of the school, while the suspect quickly left the premises. Using nearby residential surveillance footage, investigators were able to identify the young boy. A K-9 unit from the Los Altos Police Department then successfully tracked him down to his home.

Police officers, working alongside the boy’s guardian, managed to bring him in without any complications. Given his age and the circumstances of the incident, custody was transferred to Pacific Clinics, which provides juvenile mental health services for Santa Clara County.

It’s been confirmed that the boy was neither a student at the school nor a participant in the “after-school program,” according to ABC 7.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have not yet released a motive for the attack.
