Iran arrests dozens accused of being informants for Israel

In a series of developments that have heightened tensions, Iranian authorities have detained numerous individuals accused of espionage activities in favor of Israel. Local media highlighted these arrests across various regions of Iran, against the backdrop of ongoing Israeli and U.S. airstrikes targeting the nation.

In the northwestern part of Iran, the semi-official Tasnim News Agency announced that authorities apprehended 20 individuals. These arrests stem from allegations by the provincial prosecutor’s office, which accuses the suspects of transmitting sensitive information regarding Iran’s military and security installations to Israel.

Meanwhile, in the northeastern province, which has thus far been spared from airstrikes, Tasnim reported the detention of 10 individuals on similar charges. These individuals allegedly gathered intelligence on critical sites and economic infrastructure, raising concerns about potential vulnerabilities.

The Revolutionary Guards’ intelligence organization issued a statement, as reported by Tasnim, asserting that amidst the perceived invasion efforts by Israel and the U.S., there is a concurrent mobilization of spies and mercenaries to incite unrest within the country.

Adding to the situation, the Student News Network revealed that three people were taken into custody in Lorestan province in the west. They are accused of actions intended to “disturb public opinion” and desecrate mourning symbols.

These arrests come as Israel intensifies its military operations, reportedly targeting security checkpoints based on intelligence from informants within Iran. This strategy marks a significant shift in Israel’s tactical approach, a source familiar with the Israeli military’s plans informed Reuters earlier this week.

In January, weeks before the U.S. and Israel launched the current war against Iran, there were widespread anti-government protests in Iran that were repressed in the deadliest crackdown in the Islamic Republic’s history.

Authorities had blamed Israel and the U.S. for fomenting what they said were “violent riots” aimed at overthrowing the clerical establishment.
