Millions of Australians could save hundreds of dollars on their power bills after the national energy regulator proposed cuts to electricity prices for large parts of the country.
The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has proposed changes to its default market offer, which sets the maximum price that retailers can charge for electricity in NSW, Queensland and South Australia.

There is a glimmer of hope for families grappling with escalating interest rates and living expenses, as electricity bills in certain areas are projected to decrease by as much as 10.1%.

Savage noted that the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) is vigilant regarding the turmoil in the Middle East, which has caused oil prices to surge and heightened concerns over supply disruptions.

“Despite Australia’s ongoing investments in renewable energy, our electricity grid remains heavily influenced by global fossil fuel prices, including coal and gas,” Savage acknowledged.

She pointed out that these potential reductions in power costs do not account for the recent outbreak of conflict and cautioned that adjustments might be necessary depending on developments in the coming months.

“We are committed to closely monitoring the situation before finalizing the Default Market Offer in May,” she emphasized.
