Man accused of shooting father in face with crossbow captured after snowy manhunt

In a dramatic sequence of events, a man from West Virginia has found himself behind bars following a disturbing incident involving his father and a crossbow. Authorities have detailed that Chase Fleming allegedly shot his father in the face, sparking an intense manhunt that spanned multiple counties and traversed snow-laden landscapes.

This week, Fleming faced charges of malicious assault, with officials hinting at the possibility of additional charges. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, responsible for the case, provided these updates as they piece together the events leading to the altercation.

The law enforcement’s pursuit of Fleming was described as both “exhausting” and “lengthy,” as officers scoured the snowy terrains of Jackson and Roane counties before finally apprehending him. Despite the severity of the incident, the victim’s condition has been reported as stable, offering a glimmer of relief amidst the chaos.

Following his arrest, Chase Fleming was taken to a hospital for observation. This step was necessary to ensure he was medically cleared for incarceration, following the strenuous and challenging circumstances surrounding his capture.

Fleming was admitted to a hospital for observation after deputies attempted to get him medically cleared for incarceration.

Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger told WV MetroNews that Fleming entered his father’s home with a preloaded crossbow.

The two got into an argument, and Fleming allegedly fired the weapon, the outlet reported, hitting the victim in the face.

The bolt reportedly entered the victim’s face just below his left eye and exited the back of his head.

“How the guy is still alive is beyond me, it’s really remarkable,” Mellinger told MetroNews.

After fleeing the scene in his pickup truck, Fleming later crashed, police said.

Mellinger said the sheriff’s department used multiple K-9s and drones while searching for Fleming, covering roughly seven miles through snow and wooded terrain.

Bond has not been set, according to the sheriff’s department.
