Barry Keoghan is reconsidering his career amid bullying over his looks

Barry Keoghan recently shared how online bullying has impacted his life.

The 33-year-old actor, known for his role in Peaky Blinders, discussed the darker aspects of social media during an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up on Friday.

In a candid moment, he admitted, “I’ve distanced myself from the online world, yet I’m still curious. After attending an event or going somewhere, you naturally want to know how it was received. But the feedback isn’t always pleasant.”

Keoghan revealed that much of the negativity focuses on his appearance, stating, “There’s a lot of hate online. It’s a barrage of abuse about how I look.”

The Irish actor confessed that hurtful comments from online trolls have made him retreat from the public eye.

He expressed his struggles, saying, “Being completely honest, it’s becoming a significant issue. I find myself avoiding places because of these comments. When it begins to affect my work, it becomes a serious concern. It’s reached a point where being on screen feels daunting.”

The father-of-one is also upset that his three-year-old son Brando will read harsh comments about him when he’s older.

‘It is disappointing for the fans, but it’s also disappointing that my little boy has to read all of this stuff when he gets older,’ Keoghan stated.

In 2024 Keoghan deactivated his Instagram account in the wake of speculation about his split from Sabrina Carpenter.

Taking to X, he hit back at the ‘lies, hatred’ and ‘disgusting commentary’ and explained why he quit Instagram.

‘I can only sit and take so much. My name has been dragged across the internet in ways I usually don’t respond to,’ he wrote in a lengthy statement.

‘I have to respond now because it’s getting to a place where there are too many lines being crossed,’ Keoghan asserted.

‘I deactivated my account because I can no longer let this stuff distract from my family and my work. The messages I have received – no person should ever have to read them.

‘Absolute lies, hatred, disgusting commentary about my appearance, character, how I am as a parent and every other inhumane thing you can imagine,’ he wrote.

The Saltburn actor lamented that people on the internet had been ‘dragging my character and everything I worked extremely hard for and stand for.’

The message continued: ‘Talking about how I was a heroine baby and how I grew up and dragging my dear mother into it also. Knocking on my granny’s door.’

A protective parent, Keoghan shared that he is focused on fatherhood, and added that he wants his son, from his prior relationship with Alyson Sandro Kierans, to be able to look up to him.

‘Sitting outside my baby boy’s house intimidating them. That’s crossing a line. Each and every day I work harder to push myself on every level to be the healthiest and strongest person for that boy,’ he declared.

‘I want to provide opportunities for him to learn, fail and grow. I want him to be able to look up to his daddy, to have full trust in me and know I will have his back no matter what,’ he said.

He wrote in conclusion, ‘I need you to remember he has to read ALL of this about his father when he is older. Please be respectful to all. Thank u x.’
