In a shocking turn of events, a 27-year-old Maryland man, once celebrated for his extraordinary skill at playing cornhole despite being a quadruple amputee, is now embroiled in a grim legal situation. Dayton James Webber has been charged with the murder of his friend, Bradrick Michael Wells, who was also 27 years old. This incident has left the community in disbelief, given Webber’s previous notoriety for overcoming physical challenges with remarkable determination.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, Webber faces serious charges, including first-degree and second-degree murder. The tragic series of events reportedly unfolded during a car ride, when an argument broke out between Webber and Wells. In a disturbing escalation, Webber allegedly shot Wells, while two other passengers witnessed the incident unfold from the backseat.

After the shooting, Webber is said to have pulled over near Radio Station Road and Llano Drive in La Plata. He allegedly requested assistance from the other passengers to dispose of Wells’ body, but they refused. The passengers exited the vehicle and subsequently flagged down police around 10:30 p.m. that Sunday evening, seeking assistance.

Approximately two hours after the initial report, authorities were alerted by a resident of Newport Church Road in Charlotte Hall, who discovered a body in their yard. Upon arrival, police confirmed the deceased was Wells, marking the grim conclusion of the night’s events.

Detectives quickly acted on the information, securing a warrant for Webber’s arrest. The search for Webber led officers to Charlottesville, Virginia, where they found his vehicle. Webber himself was located at a hospital, undergoing treatment for an undisclosed medical condition.

Currently held at the Albemarle County Jail under a fugitive from justice charge, Webber is awaiting extradition back to Charles County. The case continues to unfold as authorities piece together the details of this tragic incident, leaving many to wonder about the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking outcome.

Webber, who became a quadruple amputee when he was 10 months old after suffering a blood infection, is a professional cornhole player in the American Cornhole League. Cornhole is known as a lawn game in which players toss beanbags at an angled platform with the goal of getting the bag through a hole in the middle of the board.

“In many ways, surprising people has always been part of my life. I went from overcoming a serious blood infection and undergoing a quadruple amputation as a baby to becoming a professional athlete as an adult,” he wrote in an essay for the “Today” Show.

He started playing in the backyard before moving on to tournaments and playing professionally for the ACL. Webber harkened back to when he nearly lost his life as a baby and how he navigated through life after his amputation.

“As doctors rushed to save my life, they realized they needed to amputate my arms and legs to slow the infection. They told my parents there was only a 3% chance that I’d survive,” he wrote. “For four months in the hospital, I fought and eventually overcame the infection. I learned how to do things, such as writing, on my own. I even taught myself how to drive by racing go-karts.”

The American Cornhole League wrote in a statement on social media that it was aware of the allegations against Webber.

“This is an extremely serious matter and our thoughts are with all those impacted, including the family and loved ones of Bradrick Michael Wells,” the statement said.
