Shelter-in-place lifted after explosion at Valero facility in Port Arthur, police say

In a reassuring update following the explosion at a Valero facility in Port Arthur, Texas, the company has confirmed that the fire has been extinguished, all staff members have been accounted for, and, thankfully, there were no injuries reported. This comes as a relief both to the employees and the local community, who anxiously waited for news after the incident unfolded on Monday evening.

The explosion sparked an immediate response from the Port Arthur Police Department, which prompted an investigation into the cause of the incident. As a precaution, residents in the city’s west side were initially instructed to shelter in place, a measure that has now been lifted as authorities have deemed the area safe.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) was quick to respond to the scene, coordinating with other agencies to manage the situation. The explosion led to temporary road closures around the vicinity of Highways 82 and 87. These measures were part of a broader effort to ensure public safety while the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

In their statement to ABC News, Valero emphasized that, alongside the local fire department and TCEQ, they detected no concerns regarding air quality post-incident. This assurance helps to allay fears of environmental impact in the wake of the explosion.

As details remain sparse regarding the events leading up to the explosion, the investigation continues, with authorities working diligently to uncover the root cause. Meanwhile, the community and employees can breathe a sigh of relief as the immediate danger has been addressed, and safety measures have proven effective.

Sabine Pass ISD said it could be closed on Tuesday, adding that officials told them the shelter-in-place would continue until later in the morning.

Port Arthur ISD, however, said Washington Elementary and Lincoln Fine Arts Academy would be open at 9 a.m.
