Former CIA Director John Brennan faced criticism from the White House and social media users on Tuesday following his controversial remarks, where he suggested Iran might be more trustworthy than President Donald Trump.
Brennan, who is among the 51 former intelligence officials that signed a widely-discussed letter claiming that The Post’s explosive story about Hunter Biden’s laptop was part of a “Russian information operation,” expressed skepticism about Trump’s claims regarding negotiations with Tehran to end the war. These comments were made during an appearance on MS NOW on Monday.
The Iranian government has denied engaging in talks with the Trump administration, which led MS NOW host Symone Sanders to question Brennan on the situation. Sanders expressed her own skepticism, noting, “I am wary of taking the word of Iran… an authoritarian regime that’s known to lie.”
In response, Brennan stated, “Well, I tend to believe Iran more than I do Donald Trump.”
The former intelligence chief accused Trump of “flailing” and argued that it was unlikely he was negotiating with “anybody speaking authoritatively right now on behalf of the Iranian government.”
Brennan, who is currently under a criminal investigation for his alleged involvement in a “treasonous conspiracy” regarding claims of collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and the Russian government, faced backlash for seemingly trusting Iran’s assertions over those of the U.S. president.
“Believing a terrorist regime that has chanted ‘Death to America’ for decades over the United States of America is shameful and Trump Derangement Syndrome at work,” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly told The Post.
“Barack Obama’s disgraced CIA Director John Brennan backs the word of Iranian regime terrorists over the United States of America,” White House aide Patrick Adams wrote on X.
One X user quipped, “If John Brennan says he doesn’t trust Trump, that actually makes me want to trust Trump!”
The person cited Brennan’s involvement in the “Russiagate hoax” and being “one of the 51 Spies Who Lie.”
“Beyond Parody,” conservative communicator Steve Guest remarked. “Obama’s Communist CIA Director John Brennan on MSNow runs cover for the world’s leading sponsor of terror.”
“John Brennan’s case of TDS is unmatched,” Guest added.
Steven Bucci, a visiting fellow with the Heritage Foundation, declared, “No one (in their right mind) believes Brennen about anything.”
The Trump administration on Tuesday sent Iran a 15-point plan aimed at ending the war.
Trump has said Iran has already agreed to the biggest point, ending its nuclear program.
