With the release of iOS 26.4, Apple has introduced a new requirement for users in the United Kingdom to verify their age. According to a support page on the company’s website, users must now confirm they are at least 18 years old to access certain services, features, or account-related actions.
UK residents can verify their age by either scanning their identification or using a credit card. For users with existing Apple accounts, age verification may be completed through a linked payment method. If users do not verify their age, Apple will automatically activate child safety measures, including blocking adult content online and blurring explicit images in messages.
Launched this Tuesday, iOS 26.4 brings new features such as AI-generated playlists in Apple Music, a concert discovery tool, and several new emojis. Although age verification steps were first seen in the beta version of iOS 26.4, Apple spokesperson Peter Ajemian told The Verge this initial deployment was a mistake. Apple has been contacted by The Verge for further clarification but has yet to respond.
According to the Financial Times, Apple’s App Store and iOS are not subject to the UK’s Online Safety Act, which mandates age verification for platforms hosting content unsuitable for children. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, has praised Apple’s new age verification process, calling it a “real win for children and families” in a statement to the Financial Times.
