VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A deputy involved in prisoner transport on a part-time basis found himself on the wrong side of the law after being apprehended for secretly installing an AirTag in his former partner’s car, as reported by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

The office disclosed that the deputy, named James Kleeman, 65, had been in a relationship with the victim for three years before their recent parting last month.

According to the report, the victim claimed to have discovered AirTags, not only in her own car but also in her adult daughter’s vehicle, with incidents dating back to 2025.

Following their separation, the victim uncovered yet another AirTag on her car. Additionally, Ring video surveillance captured Kleeman maneuvering beneath her daughter’s car at their residence, authorities revealed.

The report further stated that since the breakup, Kleeman had appeared at the victim’s locations multiple times, even using a vehicle assigned by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Remarkably, while the victim was providing her account to detectives in DeLand on Wednesday, Kleeman arrived at the scene, positioning his car behind the victim’s vehicle in the parking lot, investigators observed.

Deputies said they found AirTags on both the victim’s vehicle and her daughter’s, and Kleeman admitted to placing the AirTags, though he denied following her.

Regardless, he was arrested on Wednesday night and now faces charges of stalking and unlawful installation of a tracking device. He is held without bond.

The VSO revealed that Kleeman was originally hired in November 2012, and he has was suspended without pay on Wednesday before being fired on Thursday.
