A woman from the UK managed to fraudulently claim over $30,000 in government assistance by asserting her anxiety was so debilitating that she couldn’t even step outside her home. However, her ruse was uncovered when she was seen enjoying activities like surfing and ziplining while vacationing in Mexico.

Catherine Wieland, 33, who resides in Goring-by-Sea, England, confessed to illegally receiving benefits for more than two years. She maintained that her condition was so severe she was unable to perform basic tasks like cooking or personal hygiene, according to reports from the Independent.

Her deception came to light when it was revealed that she had traveled over 5,000 miles to Mexico, engaging in activities that contradicted her claims of severe anxiety.

Wieland’s fraudulent activities didn’t stop there; she visited Thorpe Park, an amusement park in the UK, on at least three occasions, booked 76 beauty treatments, and frequented more than 60 pubs, clubs, and restaurants.

Remarkably, even after her extravagant holiday in Mexico, Wieland sought a review of her benefits, insisting that her anxiety had deteriorated further.

When investigators presented her with evidence from her bank records, Wieland responded by saying, “I didn’t realize you’re not allowed to leave your house.”

She pleaded guilty to failing to notify a change of circumstances and was ordered to repay the roughly $31,500 she stole in taxpayer money between 2021 and 2024, according to the DWP.

She was sentenced on Thursday to 28 weeks in jail, which was suspended for 18 months, the UK version of probation.
