Golf icon Tiger Woods has entered a not guilty plea to misdemeanor DUI charges, while also announcing his decision to step back from his illustrious career.

Last week, Tiger Woods was taken into custody in Florida after declining to comply with a lawful urine test. The charges against him include property damage and misdemeanor Driving Under the Influence (DUI). According to ESPN, court documents disclosed on Tuesday that police discovered two hydrocodone pills in Woods’ possession following their response to his rollover accident.

Woods’ legal representation, Attorney Douglas Duncan from West Palm Beach, submitted the not-guilty plea on Tuesday, seeking a jury trial at the Martin County Circuit Court in Stuart, Florida. Duncan previously defended Woods in 2017 when the golfer was detained on suspicion of DUI after being found asleep in his car. At the time, Woods attributed his condition to an adverse reaction to pain medication and ultimately accepted a plea deal for reckless driving, which included entering a diversion program.

Subsequent to his plea, Woods announced he would be taking a hiatus from golf to pursue treatment and concentrate on his health.

“I recognize the gravity of the current situation,” Woods stated. “I am withdrawing for a period to seek treatment and prioritize my health. This step is crucial for me to focus on my well-being and strive for a permanent recovery.”

“I am dedicated to taking the necessary time to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused state, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and request privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself during this period,” he concluded.

Following his not guilty plea, Woods announced that he would be stepping away from golf to seek treatment and focus on his health.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” he said in a statement. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself at this time,” he added.
