Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “Chicago Fire” Season 14, Episode 16 — “Firehouse 66”

The latest episode of “Chicago Fire” delivers both intense drama and uplifting moments, particularly for fans of Joe Cruz (portrayed by Joe Minoso) and his wife, Chloe (Kristen Lee Gutoskie). Amidst the chaos, a heartwarming revelation brings a smile to viewers: Chloe is expecting another child. Joe shares this joyous news with Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), marking a significant change for the Cruz family as they prepare to welcome a new member.

This development heightens emotions for fans rooting for Joe, especially given the series’ history of putting expectant parents through the wringer. Despite potential dangers, Joe and Chloe are elated, albeit a bit surprised, as they had not anticipated expanding their family further.

Joe hesitantly confides in Kelly about the pregnancy, considering the recent struggles Kelly and Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) faced during their own adoption journey. However, Kelly is genuinely happy for the Cruz family. Yet, complications arise with their adopted son, Javi (Carlos S. Sanchez), who is less than thrilled about the impending arrival of a new sibling. Chloe discovers through Javi’s computer that he has reached out to the adoption agency, expressing a desire to connect with his biological family in Honduras. This leaves Joe and Chloe at a loss on how to handle his feelings.

While Joe’s colleagues celebrate his growing family, the situation at work becomes more precarious. The sudden dismissal of Battalion Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) for reckless conduct has shaken the firehouse, as they adjust to a new, stricter interim leader. The team had just begun to build camaraderie with Pascal before his unexpected removal, and the replacement seems less inclined to show leniency.

Adding to the pressure, city officials are demanding budget cuts, increasing the risk for Joe if he appears anything less than fully committed to his duties. Any misstep or defiance of the new Chief Hopkins (Rob Morgan, recognized from “Stranger Things” as Chief Powell) could jeopardize Joe’s job security, leaving him to care for an expanding family without a safety net.

Can Cruz and Chloe cope with their new arrival?

While all of Joe’s co-workers seem quite happy that he’s going to have a child, his job could definitely be adversely affected by the baby’s birth. Battalion Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) has been terminated for reckless behavior, leaving everyone working with the CFD on edge as they cope with a new order-hungry interim official. Joe and his co-workers had just begun to form a bond with Pascal when the city dumps him, and their new lead seems less than interested in offering them leniency.

On top of that, local leaders have been putting tons of pressure on the department to cut costs, leaving Joe vulnerable to termination if he comes off as anything less than devoted to his job. If he steps out of line or disobeys newbie Chief Hopkins (Rob Morgan, best known as Chief Powell of “Stranger Things”), he might end up on the unemployment line with five mouths to feed.

At least one of his problems has an easy solution. After searching for the best way to talk to Javi about his roots, Joe decides to fly with him to Honduras during his next furlough. Javi is overjoyed at last, and Joe is relieved that he can help his son connect with his biological family without losing custody of the kid. With such sterling parenting skills at their disposal, is it any wonder why he and Chloe want to add one more to their tribe?
