A Michigan resident is facing charges after allegedly attacking his girlfriend’s brother with a weightlifting bar while the victim was asleep on a couch.

Jevonn Green, aged 46, is now facing serious charges including assault with intent to murder, aggravated domestic violence, and assault with a dangerous weapon, as stated by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office announcement. Given this is reportedly his fourth offense, a conviction could mean a minimum of 25 years behind bars, with the possibility of a life sentence.

The incident took place on a Sunday when Green returned to his residence in Chesterfield Township, Michigan, located just northeast of Detroit. He lived there with his girlfriend and her 61-year-old brother, according to authorities.

While the brother was asleep on the couch, Green is accused of repeatedly hitting him on the head with a weightlifting bar. After the alleged attack, Green is said to have woken his girlfriend, who was asleep in a separate room, and instructed her to dial 911 for her brother’s aid, as detailed by the prosecutor’s office.

The victim was rushed to the hospital and, as of Thursday, remains in critical condition, suffering from a decompressed skull fracture and brain bleeding, the agency reported.

“It is deeply concerning that an individual was reportedly attacked while in a defenseless state of sleep,” remarked Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido. “Domestic violence extends beyond romantic relationships. In emergencies, victims are urged to contact 911.”

Green was arrested and booked into the Macomb County Jail on a $250,000 bond. “If released, he must wear a GPS tether and submit to drug testing three times weekly” and he “cannot return to the residence where the alleged assault occurred, nor may he consume any alcohol or drugs,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The defendant’s defense attorney asked for Green to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, a request that was granted. He was arraigned in court on Thursday and is scheduled to return on April 16.
