Ukraine signals progress on US security guarantees after call with Trump envoys

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism on Wednesday about advancing efforts to resolve the conflict with Russia. This comes after a significant discussion with U.S. representatives, including President Donald Trump’s envoys, regarding a U.S.-endorsed security agreement.

Following the high-level conference, Zelenskyy took to social media platform X to share details of the “positive” dialogue he had with Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The primary focus of their conversation was establishing a “dignified peace.”

“We have agreed to bolster security assurances,” Zelenskyy announced, adding that he has directed his team to swiftly revise the relevant documents. This aims to ensure that Ukraine’s security guarantees are robust, the potential for post-war rebuilding is realistic, and that these plans are actionable,” he stated.

During a meeting held on April 1, 2026, President Zelenskyy underscored the necessity for clear agreements that provide Ukrainians with a clear understanding of how international allies will react to prevent any future Russian aggression.

“We require strong, unified stances, and Ukraine’s role in reinforcing this strength is indisputable,” Zelenskyy remarked. “I anticipate that our teams will engage in meaningful work over the next few days, allowing us to witness tangible progress. The establishment of a trilateral framework — a leaders’ format — is crucial,” he concluded.

“We need strong, shared positions, and Ukraine’s contribution to this strength is unquestionable,” Zelenskyy wrote. “… I expect that the teams will work substantively in the coming days so that we can all feel progress. A trilateral format — a leaders’ format — all of this is necessary.”

In a subsequent video, Zelenskyy reported Russia launched a massive wave of more than 700 drones Wednesday, including “shaheds,” targeting Ukraine’s energy sites, food warehouses and residential buildings across multiple regions.

Although Ukrainian forces intercepted roughly 90% of the incoming drones, Zelenskyy condemned the bombardment as Russia’s direct response to Ukraine’s proposal for an Easter ceasefire.

He noted that a halt in fighting during the holidays was intended to be a signal that diplomacy could be successful.

Beyond the U.S. and Europe, Zelenskyy said Defense Minister Rustem Umerov is working to secure long-term defense contracts with several Middle Eastern nations, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain and Turkey.
