Trump warns a 'whole civilisation will die tonight' if a deal with Iran isn't reached

Iranian officials have urged young people to form human chains to protect power plants, as US President Donald Trump warns a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Tehran does not meet his latest deadline for the Islamic Republic to agree to a deal that includes reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

On Tuesday, airstrikes targeted two bridges and a train station in Iran, while the United States launched attacks on military sites located on Iran’s vital oil hub, Kharg Island. This marked the second instance of American forces targeting the island.

President Trump has previously extended deadlines but indicated that the one set for 8 PM on Tuesday (10 AM Wednesday AEST) would be final. The escalating rhetoric from both sides has heightened tensions, leaving many Iranians feeling anxious.

Mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey are reportedly working tirelessly to broker a compromise before the deadline passes.

An official noted that Iran’s reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is contingent upon the easing of sanctions. The United States has shown a willingness to relax some restrictions, particularly those affecting Iran’s oil industry, to help stabilize the global oil market.

The official provided this information under the condition of anonymity, given the sensitive ongoing diplomatic efforts.
