BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Katie Delaney, a prominent North Brevard County commissioner known for advocating firefighter pay raises and pushing for greater transparency in county governance, has decided to step down before completing her term.

Delaney revealed on Wednesday during a county commission meeting that her family has chosen to embrace a “life-changing” opportunity that requires relocating out of state.

In 2024, as a Republican candidate, Delaney positioned herself as an outsider against more seasoned competitors, vowing to transform the operations of county government. She assured the commission that her mission for change would continue through the efforts of her team and supporters.

“We didn’t just arrive; we transformed the culture. We’ve demonstrated that bold, servant leadership still has its place here in Brevard County,” Delaney stated.

In a video posted on her Facebook page, Delaney reflected on life’s unexpected turns, acknowledging that while some may feel disappointed by her decision, such changes are sometimes necessary.

Delaney rose to prominence as an early member of Moms for Liberty, advocating for the end of COVID-19 school quarantines in 2021. She also criticized educational materials in the district, which the group argued promoted far-left ideologies, such as critical race theory and social-emotional learning.

But she also became a champion in pushing direct community engagement with government, something she took with her when she became a county commissioner for District 1, which included the northern part of the county.

Delaney urged the community to continue to demand that same level of engagement on Tuesday night.

“Thank you for standing beside me through it all, I will carry that with me long after this chapter closes,” Delaney said.

Delaney’s resignation will be effective May 2. Gov. DeSantis will be the one to appoint someone to serve as commissioner through the end of Delaney’s term, which ends in 2028.
