In a move set to take effect this December, the federal government is gearing up to initiate automatic registration for eligible men for the military draft. This development comes on the heels of a proposed rule published just last week.

The Selective Service System (SSS), responsible for maintaining the roster of Americans eligible for the draft, has put forward this “automatic registration” rule change. The proposal was officially submitted to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30.

Last December, Congress gave the green light to automatic draft registration as a component of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. This significant piece of legislation, which is crucial for authorizing military personnel and operations funding, includes this update as a key provision.

According to existing federal law, most males aged between 18 and 25 are already obligated to register with the Selective Service System in the event a military draft is ever called upon.
