Authorities were summoned to manage traffic on Point Nepean Road in Dromana around 9 a.m. after receiving several reports of a live seal basking on the road near Anthony’s Nose beach, a popular spot along the coast.

Drivers noticed the seal, affectionately known by the community as “Sammy,” taking a nap on the left side of the bustling roadway.

Traffic experienced delays of up to five minutes as police officers arrived to assist in directing vehicles and ensuring Sammy’s safety.

Both directions of the road were temporarily closed for several hours, with motorists advised to steer clear of the area. Traffic cones were strategically placed to protect the marine visitor.

By 1 p.m., all lanes were reopened after Sammy was safely moved away from the traffic zone.

The Marine Response Unit from Zoos Victoria was on hand to handle the situation.

Sammy has been safely returned to the water, VicTraffic confirmed.

Seals are a common sight along the Mornington Peninsula, however the MRU warns not to approach as they can be dangerous if they feel threatened.

Sammy is a regular roamer along the tourist region, with locals often spotting the seal on adventures out of the water.
