Star SoCal football player dies suddenly as tributes pour in

The high school sports community was struck by tragedy as a promising football player, who was on the verge of joining Cal Poly, has passed away unexpectedly.

Cal Poly Mustangs’ head coach, Tim Skipper, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Ryder Barnes, a 17-year-old athlete, through a heartfelt statement released on Friday.

“Our entire Cal Poly football family is profoundly saddened by Ryder Barnes’ passing,” Skipper shared. “Ryder was not only an outstanding young athlete but also had a bright future ahead. This loss is deeply felt by everyone. We extend our thoughts, prayers, and sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who cherished him during this incredibly challenging period.”

Barnes, at just 17, had recently committed to Cal Poly, joyfully announcing his decision on November 3, 2025, with the words, “Beyond blessed to announce my commitment to Cal Poly! Thank you, Lord!”

At his high school, Barnes was recognized as much more than just an emerging football star.

At the high school level, Barnes was far more than just a rising football talent.

In a tribute posted on social media, his school described a player who made a lasting impact both on and off the field.

“There are no words big enough to capture the loss we feel. Today we honor an exceptional young man. One who showed up with heart, led with strength, and left an impact far beyond the field,” the statement read.

Barnes earned widespread recognition for his dominance as a defensive end, collecting Epsilon League Defensive Player of the Year honors, along with All Orange County and Defensive MVP accolades.

But those achievements, the school emphasized, only scratched the surface of who he was.

He was deeply rooted in his family, having been raised by his grandparents while also helping care for his younger sister.

He was cherished by his older brother and sister, and remembered as a loyal teammate and friend throughout his community.

“Ryder was well known in our community as an amazing teammate and friend,” the school added, noting the profound void left behind.

The tribute closed with a promise to carry his legacy forward: “Your light, your energy, and your brotherhood will never be forgotten.

“You weren’t just a teammate, you were family. In loving memory, and forever in our hearts! We will carry your legacy in every rep, every game, every moment.”

Barnes, who was 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, would have celebrated his 18th birthday in October.

“It’s all in God’s hands. Miss you buddy, honored to have been apart of your life. See you in the next.” Fellow Cal Poly signee and 5-Star Kicker, Noah Thayer posted on X.
