Woman pranks boyfriend into thinking she cheated - but it backfired

A North Carolina woman named Nevaeh Covington attempted to prank her boyfriend, a convicted felon, by making him think she was cheating. However, the joke took a dangerous turn when he believed her and reacted violently.

On April 5, in Charlotte, 20-year-old Shyhied Ivey opened fire on a vehicle filled with five people after Covington’s prank led him to think she was involved with another man, according to an affidavit reviewed by the Daily Mail.

Police officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a call just after midnight regarding an assault with a deadly weapon at Columbus Circle.

Covington informed the police that she and four others—Gernala Covington, Quimya James, Damion Rann, and Nadiya Cousart-Thompson—had been at Camp North End, a local shopping area, grabbing a meal earlier that evening, as per the records.

She and Rann concocted a plan to trick Ivey, with whom she had been in a relationship for five months, by having Rann call him, pretending to be romantically involved with Covington.

After delivering the misleading message to Ivey, the group drove off, only to find themselves pursued by Ivey in another car. Covington had inadvertently shared her location with him via Find My iPhone, she later explained to the authorities.

An irate Ivey, who was arrested six times in 2024, then called Covington and started ‘driving recklessly attempting to get them to pull over’ while appearing to fire a handgun into the air multiple times.

Covington and her friends pulled up to the intersection of Freedom Drive and Wesley Village Road, in the left turning lane, when her angry boyfriend pulled his vehicle up next to theirs and fired approximately three shots at Gernala Covington’s red Nissan Altima.

The suspect then fled the scene. Gernala’s rear right window was shattered by the bullets, and no injuries were reported.

Rann told police he also received a text message from Ivey around 1.32am, stating: ‘Stop playing wimme bro.’

Detectives were able to locate Ivey after finding footage captured by DOT cameras that showed his black Nissan Sedan pulling up on the right side of the red Nissan, the affidavit said.

The clip also showed ‘three bright bursts’ coming from Ivey’s vehicle as glass shattered inside Gernala’s car.

Officers also discovered a shell casing that ‘appeared fresh and had no road marks’ at the scene of the shooting, the report stated.

Ivey has been charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm into an occupied conveyance in operation, domestic violence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He was sentenced on April 9 to 24 months of supervised probation.
