Eric Swalwell scandal rocks Congress expulsion efforts

In a significant political development, members of Congress are taking steps to push California gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell out of office, a move that could significantly alter the dynamics of the House of Representatives.

Swalwell’s political future hangs in the balance following serious allegations of sexual misconduct, including rape, brought forward by four women in a report released on Friday. Additionally, the Democratic congressman is under investigation by the Manhattan district attorney, further complicating his position.

In response to these revelations, Representative Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, announced her intention to call for a House floor vote next week to expel Swalwell from Congress.

“If Democrats choose to shield this kind of behavior, they’ll have to face the consequences,” Luna stated emphatically.

Many Democratic lawmakers quickly urged Swalwell to withdraw from the gubernatorial race, where he was seen as a leading contender. However, some, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, stopped short of calling for his resignation from Congress, a stance that has drawn criticism.

Despite the discomfort, some Democrats may be willing to support the effort to expel Swalwell, especially if it leads to further expulsions of other members of Congress.

Jeffries and others are expected to counter with a move to bring up a vote on expelling Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), who has been embroiled in a sexual scandal as well.

A staffer whom Gonzales allegedly had an affair with committed suicide.

Swalwell has repeatedly denied the accusations, promising in a Friday video that he “will fight them with everything that I have.”

Gonzales has admitted to the affair but insisted “I had absolutely nothing to do with her tragic passing.” He dropped his reelection bid in response.

A number of elected officials expressed support for the idea of holding both Swalwell and Gonzales accountable for the alleged actions.

“Congress must hold itself to the highest ethical standard, regardless of party,” wrote Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.).

Here’s the latest on the allegations against Rep. Eric Swalwell

The tit-for-tat expulsions could also expand to another Democrat and another Republican in Congress. Rep. Corey Mills (R-Fl.) has been linked to a report of an assault on a woman.

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fl.) has been indicted and is accused of embezzling $5 million of federal disaster money.

Both have denied wrongdoing. Luna said there would be a motion at the end of the month to expel Cherflilus-McCormick.
