Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke looks back at her first 15 months in office

CHICAGO (WLS) — The chief prosecutor of Cook County, speaking with the I-Team, confessed that her judicial background didn’t initially prepare her for the political elements inherent in her current role, which she acknowledges are substantial.

As the head of the country’s second-largest prosecutorial office, Eileen O’Neill Burke emphasizes her commitment to lawful practices, prioritizing the removal of violent offenders from the community.

“Our charging and prosecutorial choices hinge solely on legal principles and factual evidence,” O’Neill Burke assured the I-Team.

She expressed satisfaction with the notable boost in office morale over the last year.

“We’ve completely transformed the situation. We’ve moved from widespread understaffing in every division to now having a list of eager candidates wanting to join us,” O’Neill Burke remarked.

Under her leadership, the office has enhanced its focus on specialized training for tackling cybercrimes, cryptocurrency-related cases, hate crimes, animal cruelty, and more.

O’Neill Burke says it’s the stream of domestic violence cases that keeps her up at night.

“That will continue to be a challenge until we get our domestic violence rates down to a level that we don’t see an increase,” O’Neill Burke told the I-Team. “We’re going to address it as we go forward and make sure our victims are not afraid to come to court and make sure our victims feel heard and supported and responded to. That’s why training is so vital, and that’s why we created a whole special bureau of those types of cases. Those are the two areas that we have seen an increase in violent crime, domestic violence, and CTA crime, and that is where we’re bringing our focus.”
