The perfect successor to Lost has been hiding from me for years

Since Jack’s decision to remain behind in 2010, I’ve been on a quest to recapture the thrilling emotions that Lost once sparked. I yearn for an intricate mystery packed with a large ensemble and an abundance of secrets, a storyline that fuels endless speculative conversations with friends. Sixteen years have passed, and my pursuit has often ended in disappointment. Yellowjackets initially seemed promising, but it faltered, while potential hits like 1899 were canceled prematurely. Surprisingly, the ideal successor to Lost has been airing for years, yet the fragmented streaming landscape almost led me to overlook it.

The fourth season of From premieres on April 19th, drawing striking parallels to Lost. Set in an enigmatic small town in the U.S., newcomers find themselves trapped with no way out. To make matters worse, human-like monsters emerge at night, preying on anyone caught outside or foolish enough to invite them inside. The town’s inhabitants must band together for survival, striving to unravel the mystery of their predicament and find a way home. It’s reminiscent of the Lost island but with a far more terrifying twist, complete with abundant gore.

Much like Lost, From rapidly accumulates secrets, creating conversations that sound like a jumble of bizarre elements to outsiders. The series features magical talismans, sinister ballerinas, inexplicable electricity, and dream sequences that defy logic. With a sprawling cast that expands over time, the show doesn’t shy away from jaw-dropping deaths. Echoing Lost, unexpected revelations challenge your understanding, like a mysterious voice on the radio or a disappearing dungeon. The series even kicks off with a “previously on” segment narrated by Lost alum Harold Perrineau.

So, how did I almost miss a show seemingly crafted to fulfill my Lost cravings? The simple answer is the overwhelming number of streaming services. From airs on MGM Plus, formerly Epix, a service under the Amazon umbrella yet distinct from Prime Video. Despite being vaguely aware of it, I hadn’t explored it, aside from mild curiosity about a Stephen King adaptation. Other exclusives like Robin Hood and Beacon 23 failed to capture my interest, and From‘s nondescript title didn’t help its case.

The streaming industry is dominated by a few giants, leaving platforms like MGM to vie for attention. It’s a tough market. Netflix leads the pack with a significant head start, while Disney capitalizes on its vast array of beloved properties. Amazon and Apple are investing heavily but still lag behind. In this competitive environment, services like MGM Plus often become niche, making it easy for shows to go unnoticed. Even as someone who tracks the TV industry, I find myself missing out. The challenge grows with major platforms like Netflix expanding into diverse offerings, making it hard to justify adding yet another subscription.

I’m unsure what the solution is. A single all-encompassing streamer isn’t ideal, especially in an industry grappling with consolidation issues. However, the current streaming landscape is certainly challenging to navigate. There are too many choices, and the costs continue to rise. With subscriptions to four streaming services, plus cable, it’s easy for a series like From to slip through the cracks.

At least there’s one benefit to learning about a show late: binge-watching. From lends itself well to this, with its cliffhangers and revelations, along with seasons that come in at very manageable packs of 10 episodes. So if you have a similar Lost-shaped hole in your life, now is the exact right time to jump into From. It’ll just require one more subscription.
